| I read the most interesting interview in Dwell Magazine recently. It was an interview with Augustin Scott de Martinville, the head of the master’s program in luxury and design at the University of Art and Design in Lausanne, Switzerland. (What a cool job!) What most struck a chord in me was the question of the ethical ramifications of luxury, the disparity, perhaps, between the producers of luxury goods and the consumers of such goods. As a purveyor of luxury goods for nurseries and children’s rooms, I’m inclined to agree. Most of the lines we carry are not mass-produced on assembly lines overseas. They are hand-crafted by family-owned companies in the United States. They are made of the highest quality materials by fairly-treated artisans and craftspeople. They are created by talented, women-owned companies here in Austin. I think it is a true luxury to own something made by someone who loves what they do, like the wonderful, talented companies with whom we do business.

| This Christmas, my favorite gifts to give are the ones that keep on giving, like Stray Dog Designs lighting and accessories. All their lighting and furniture is crafted by artisans in sustainable jobs. Every time you buy a Stray Dog product, a portion of the purchase price is donated to organizations that do things like feed hungry children, shelter homeless families, or create loving homes for stray dogs and cats. Visit our store to see pieces in person–like this super-cute Miss Jennifer Lamp. We are also able to order anything in their catalog for you. Stop by to see the newest designs!

| We don’t usually carry a lot of clothing here at baby coco–our specialty is nursery and children’s furniture and decor–but we simply couldn’t pass up Pixie Lily’s Jersey Collection. We just couldn’t resist the soft jersey and the sweet embroidery. No baby should be without these luxurious layette staples!

| Finally! The Mercer Bag is back! This fabulous bag from Nest Children is the ultimate diaper bag. Not too big, not too small, this lovely leather bag has a zip-out liner–no need to cry over spilled milk–and a changing pad that zips away in the bottom. This bag transitions easily from diaper bag to handbag, so much so that I bought one to carry as my handbag! When I receive compliments–and I receive many on the bag–I love to tell them it is actually a diaper bag!

| The big question….should you find out or not? While many new parents can’t wait to find out the sex of their baby, others are happy to wait. It’s one of the true surprises in life, they say. However having a “surprise” baby can prove a bit challenging when decorating the nursery. If you don’t love neutrals or yellow and green, you may be at a loss for what to do in the room. At the very least, choose furniture in a neutral color, especially if you are having your first baby. Ideally, you’ll pass on the furniture to baby No. 2. You can then wait to decorate the nursery or…come see us at baby coco. We have a solution for surprises! You can sit down with us and choose boy bedding and accessories and girl bedding and accessories. Bring us the doctor’s note revealing the sex in a sealed envelope. We’ll open it and order the right stuff for you! We’ll have you put down a flat deposit, so there is no hint of the gender. We’ll hold everything for you until the baby arrives and then make delivery or pickup arrangements when the special day arrives! We take this secret very seriously–our staff knows that telling is a firing offense! But we’d never tell anyway. It’s always exciting waiting for you to find out for yourself! If you’d still like to find out, check out ohdeedoh for fun ways to share the news with family and friends.

| We love, love, love bags here at baby coco. Have I mentioned that before? Our favorites are diaper bags disguised to look like fabulous handbags. We believe there is no reason to carry a bag post-baby, that you would never carry pre-baby. You just need a bigger bag. With lots of pockets. And maybe a changing pad. Our number one favorite is the Mercer Bag from Nest Children–due back in soon! (We’ve got a waiting list for this bag!). We also love Storksak’s bags for moms and dads–they come with insulated bottle pockets. How handy is that? We also adore the Gypsy Tote from Serena and Lily and can’t get enough of the Lemon Curry Leather Hobo from OiOi. Stop by to find your favorite!

If you missed our wonderful Mother’s Tea event at Austin Kula Yoga this past Sunday, don’t worry! You did not miss your only chance to get some baby wearing advice and instruction. Stop by anytime to get personalized assistance picking out the perfect sling for you and your sweet new baby. You don’t have to wait until your new baby arrives to get fitted for your sling. You’ll want to get started using the sling right away–baby wearing goes hand-in-hand with swaddling to help calm your baby and help your baby sleep well. We can help you find the right size and style. Most sling manufacturers recommend measuring from your shoulder diagonally to your hip to figure your size. While that is a good general guideline, we find that it helps to actually try on a size up and down in all the styles to find the best fit. If you’ll hold on to the packaging and wait to wash the sling, we are happy to exchange it if you are struggling with your choice after your baby arrives. Come by and see us first, though. We can usually help you make some small adjustments so you’ll be a successful baby-wearing mama!
