Last Sunday’s Mother’s Tea at Austin Kula Yoga also included a very special guest, author and perinatal psychologist Carrie Contey, Ph.D.. Carrie introduced us to the CALMS approach to soothing your baby, five basic steps that help new parents build more conscious, connected relationships to their infants. This is a must-read resource for learning helpful solutions to calming your baby–and yourself! Stop by the store to pick up your copy of CALMS A Guide to Soothing Your Baby. baby wearing 101

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009
If you missed our wonderful Mother’s Tea event at Austin Kula Yoga this past Sunday, don’t worry! You did not miss your only chance to get some baby wearing advice and instruction. Stop by anytime to get personalized assistance picking out the perfect sling for you and your sweet new baby. You don’t have to wait until your new baby arrives to get fitted for your sling. You’ll want to get started using the sling right away–baby wearing goes hand-in-hand with swaddling to help calm your baby and help your baby sleep well. We can help you find the right size and style. Most sling manufacturers recommend measuring from your shoulder diagonally to your hip to figure your size. While that is a good general guideline, we find that it helps to actually try on a size up and down in all the styles to find the best fit. If you’ll hold on to the packaging and wait to wash the sling, we are happy to exchange it if you are struggling with your choice after your baby arrives. Come by and see us first, though. We can usually help you make some small adjustments so you’ll be a successful baby-wearing mama!

purple is the new pink

Sunday, July 12th, 2009
I can’t get enough of purple lately. Everything from lavender and lilac to magenta and aubergine–so cool and sophisticated! Purple is associated with royalty and nobility in human color psychology, from classical antiquity when purple dye was very precious and available only to the very wealthy. Now it is available to all of us but it still feels kind of rich, doesn’t it? Purple works with so many other colors–browns, greens, blues, yellows. It is also a nice alternative to pink. Not all girls like pink! I love Miss T’s sweet lilac and chocolate brown nursery, pictured below. I could move right in…
